Prairie cordgrass grows in moist to wet soil such as sand, silt, clay or loam. It needs direct sunlight, and does well in wet prairies and marshy lakeshores. It can spread rapidly, and is very useful in erosion control. The leaf margins have very fine teeth and can cut skin.
